Edinburgh Named Europe’s Most Walkable City

Here are some walks worth making time for

Edinburgh Named Europe’s Most Walkable City by TimeOut and Honestly, It Makes Sense

When you think about it, it’s not surprising at all.

When you live here, you almost forget how easy it is. You drift from one part of the city to another without really planning it. A quick wander turns into passing historic streets, green spaces, and some of the best views in Scotland, all within minutes of each other.

With a walkability score of 93%, Edinburgh isn’t just convenient, it invites you to slow down a bit and properly take it in.

Of course, places like Calton Hill, Arthur’s Seat and the Royal Mile deserve their reputation. But some of the best moments in the city happen when you step slightly off those well-worn paths.

Here are a few walks to add to your list.

Stockbridge to Dean Village (via the Water of Leith)

This is one of the most peaceful walks in the city. Start in Stockbridge, grab a coffee if you like, then follow the Water of Leith towards Dean Village. Along the way, you will feel completely removed from the city, despite being just minutes from the centre. Surrounded by greenery and the gentle flow of the river, it is easy to forget you are in a capital city at all. It is the perfect escape for a slower, more mindful wander.

Cramond to South Queensferry (through Dalmeny Estate)

For a completely different perspective of Edinburgh, head out towards the coast. The walk from Cramond to South Queensferry, passing through the Dalmeny Estate, offers a mix of scenic coastline, open countryside and historic estate grounds. Expect stunning views across the Firth of Forth, with the iconic Forth Road Bridge providing a dramatic backdrop. It is a walk that combines sea air, nature and some of the best views.

Pentland Hills (just 20 minutes away)

The Pentlands are often overlooked, especially with the Highlands calling from further north. But honestly, you do not need to go that far. Rolling hills, wide open landscapes and even Highland cows make this a must for anyone wanting a taste of Scotland’s wild side without travelling far. The views back over Edinburgh are just as rewarding as the climb itself.

So next time you are in the city, take advantage of its walkability. Step off the main routes, explore somewhere different and you will discover a side of Edinburgh that many visitors miss.
