One day in Edinburgh: A City Guide

Here's our top things to do and see (just the good stuff!)

Top Tips

We'd love to say that you can see everything that Edinburgh has to offer in a day but the truth is there is so much to this beautiful city that it's simply not possible. If it's your first time this is the guide for you! Dont get FOMO, just take in what you can, I'm sure you'll be back!

On that note.. plan for spontaneity! Leave space between the big sights. That’s when you stumble upon the jazz bar in a bookshop, or the best flat white you’ve ever had embrace it and enjoy the hidden best bits of the city!

Eat like you live here. Skip the chains, seek out thoughtful, locally rooted food spots like Tipo for some pasta, Spry for a glass of wine or a pastry from Lannan bakery.

Let the city surprise you. It will. In the quiet corners, the stories whispered from the stones, the locals who stop for a chat, or the skyline that never gets old.

Top sites to see

Victoria Street - Edinburgh's most colourful street (said to be the inspiration behind dragon alley (if you know you know!) take a wander down here enjoy a bit of window shopping before it opens up to the historic Grassmarket. (the best bit is this is only a 1-minute walk from your doorstep at Moment George IV Bridge!)

Grassmarket - Once you get down here, take it in this is where they would host markets in medeviel times and if you're lucky enough to visit on a Saturday you'll get a glimpse of one. From here you can take a wander to the Vennel viewpoint (where you've seen those enviable instagram pictures of the castle!)

Edinburgh Castle – perched high above the city, this iconic landmark is a must-see. Take in the panoramic views and uncover centuries of Scottish history.

take it all in...

The Royal Mile

From the castle wander down the royal mile and take in the tourist charm, bagpipes, street artists and the buzz of people. Take your time and take a moment to peek down the various closes. Tucked between the buildings, they reveal hidden views, secret courtyards, and tiny snapshots of the city’s past (Our favourites are Advocates Close).

Cockburn Street

Just opposite the Tron Kirk Market (well worth a quick peek for some local crafts and one-of-a-kind finds), take a wander down Cockburn Street. With its curve of historic buildings and tucked-away shops, it’s one of the most charming wanders in the city.

Princes Street Gardens

Take a slow stroll through this peaceful green space beneath the castle. Make your way to the Ross Fountain which is both majestic and photogenic, then pause by the Scott Monument for a moment of calm before stepping back into the city’s busy streets.

National Museum of Scotland

Step inside for an eclectic mix of natural history, design, and interactive exhibits – perfect for a quick cultural fix.

Calton Hill

If you’ve got a little time (and a bit of energy), head up Calton Hill. The views are worth it - panoramic scenes of the city, the sea, and the hills beyond, truly Scotland at its best!

the best bits

Pause,
Refresh,
Reconnect

Staying with us at George IV Bridge means you're perfectly placed, close enough to pause without missing a thing. Put your feet up for a cup of tea and perch by the window for a bit of people watching (or a castle view if you're lucky!). Then when you're ready, head back out for more.

Our favourite food spots

If you’re anything like us, you know that discovering a great place to eat can be one of the best ways to experience a city. Here are a few of our favourite spots:

The Outsider - a long time local favourite and for good reason. Floor to ceiling windows frame iconic views of the castle, while the menu brings together simple seasonal ingredients, it strikes that perfect balance between laid-back and a little bit special.

The Black Grape - a little moody, a little glamorous, and very good at what it does. With tasty small plates and seriously good wine, The Black Grape turns dinner into a bit of an occasion without ever trying too hard.

Under the Stairs - Cosy, mismatched furniture, flickering candlelight and great food. It’s laid-back in all the right ways, great for a long lunch, casual dinner, or just a cocktail tucked into a velvet corner.

Civerinos - if you'd rather unwind and take in the views from your apartment we totally get it! Order a pizza from Civerinos and relax!
